One Book Habersham History
In 2015, the inaugural year, thousands of people read and discussed Carmen Agra Deedy's Martina the Beautiful Cockroach. In March of 2015, Ms. Deedy spent three days at three elementary schools sharing her amazing storytelling gift. Hundreds of adults and children were able to enjoy her stories at a public event.
The second year's book was Lester Laminack's Three Hens and a Peacock-a colorful, crazy book on the theme of accepting our own gifts. Once again, thousands of children and adults in Habersham County read the book. Mr. Laminack spent two days in Habersham County in April 2016. During this visit all Habersham County elementary students were able to hear him speak, and many adults and families attended an evening community event.
The 2017 book was Caldecott Honor: One Cool Friend written by Toni Buzzeo with illustrations by David Small. Author Toni Buzzeo came to Habersham County for several days to speak to elementary students and meet the people of Habersham County at a special meet and greet held at Piedmont College.
The 2018 book was Albert written by Donna Jo Napoli with illustrations by Jim LaMarche. Ms. Napoli visited Habersham in April to speak to elementary students and to speak at a special meet and greet event at Piedmont College.
2019’s book was A Stone for Sascha by Aaron Becker. As in previous years, Mr. Becker came to Habersham County for special school and community events during the month of April.
The book chosen for 2020 was 14 Cows for America by Carmen Agra Deedy. Hundreds of copies of the book were circulated throughout Habersham County in the early months of 2020, but author visits and community events were cancelled due to Covid.
